Member Profile: Shane Monks
[Interview by Julian M]
When first I asked Shane how he’d come to Clubhouse, he began by naming an old schoolmate of his, who had already discovered the benefits of Clubhouse. After they had not seen each other for 33 years, his disclosure of mental health issues prompted her suggestion of Clubhouse.
Shane then detailed Clubhouse’s part in his relocation from Brisbane some three and a half years ago. Similarly to others I’ve met, people born in Toowoomba are not unusually caught by a magic magnet that attracts them back.
Clubhouse also helped organize accommodation and emotional support, while facilitating food and such; they also negotiated with other community organizations to get his act together.
In Brisbane Shane had been variously employed, a Jack of all trades but master of none. He found employment in pallet yards, stock case construction, and folk lift driving.
Shane’s first job in Toowoomba was also as a result of Clubhouse’s employment program. That was washing Queensland Government cars, and lasted until Shane found full time employment in metal rolling, or making corrugated steel or aluminium.
He then found enough overtime to move on from government cars.
Shane also discussed his plan involving purchasing and restoring a vehicle, with which he can chase jobs for the future.
Shane also likes his reception work taken voluntarily now, at Clubhouse. He will undergo mentorship from our new staff member Jana, who will be championing the reception area at Clubhouse.
