"Clubhouse gave me the want and the will to go out and to try new things and get on with my life. So when I was offered an opportunity to work at Vanguard Laundry I jumped at it – and here I am working seven hour shifts for five days a week. And not only that I will turn 60 next year and have just got engaged!"

Congratulations! - that is totally awesome. Tell us a little bit about what led you to first feeling ready for work.

As most of you know I have Bipolar Disorder. Before Clubhouse, I felt isolated and my social life was suffering. When I got to Clubhouse it was so welcoming, people were so helpful and everyone was treated with respect and as individuals. There are so many opportunities to share with other members and to talk and to recover. After a while I felt ready to join the Job Readiness program. I completed the six class sessions and then my eight work-ordered day shifts and to my delight was then offered a contract at the laundry.

What has been your biggest work-related challenge on your personal mental health journey?

The biggest challenge for me has been my inability to support myself. I find it hard not being independent and relying on help from others. But actually it has been easy to settle into a work routine at Vanguard. Everyone is treated as an equal. I feel like it is home away from home and the staff are incredible. The work is very active which helps my mental health.

So what’s next on your employment horizon?

Well I have been working on my resume and Harry from Vanguard is applying for an internship for me at the Clifton Hospital laundry. I hope it works out.

So you have a big year ahead then?

Yes - I have 😊 I have a wedding to plan and I am also looking forward to going on the combined Clubhouse camp in May. It’s been a long time since I went to the beach.

What would you say to anyone who is considering joining Clubhouse?

I would say – come with me! I can’t encourage you enough. Whatever you are dealing with, there is something at Clubhouse for everyone. If you are having a bad day and don’t want to be around lots of people you can go outside and enjoy the garden. If you want to learn something new and be active, there is always something for you to do. And when you feel job ready, there are great opportunities for you.

What positive advice or inspiring words would you give to someone who is struggling?

Don’t ever give up, it will get better.
