Ashi Tsering -
Mental Health Recovery Worker

Ashi grew up in Tibet and left her home there as a refugee. She has lived in India and studied high school there before finishing a Bachelor degree in Psychology, Economics and English. Ashi migrated to Australia with her children in the hope it would be a safe place for them to grow up and have opportunities. Ashi’s work career has included accounting, administration and various roles in Community Services. Her role at Toowoomba Clubhouse is a Mental Health Recovery Worker. You can always find Ashi busy working alongside the members either in the kitchen or admin and always supporting members on their journey. When she’s not at Clubhouse, Ashi loves to dance and looks forward to going out, having fun and being silly every chance she gets.

Who would play you in a film? I like Julia Roberts, especially her film Erin Brockovich. She was an ordinary character but used common sense to get things done.

If you were planning a music festival, who – dead or alive – would be your headliner? It would have to be Michael Jackson. I cried when he died. I love the way he danced and invented all those moves. Not only that, the music he wrote had so much meaning and helped change the world and how we see things. I love Black and White and all those kinds of songs.

You're given an airplane ticket to anywhere in the world – where do you choose to go? I want to go to Tibet, my home. I would see my house that I left when I was three years old so I’d love to go back and see if it’s still there.

What's your favourite memory?  Whenever I see my brother. Doctors said he would die years ago but 20 years on he is still strong and I love every time I get to see him.

Who is your inspiration? My brother. Even though doctors did not think he would survive he has never given up. He inspires me through his strong spirit to never, ever give up.

You're on a deserted island – what have you brought with you? I’d take something that would bring me back to civilization. Maybe a boat. I love boats and that would get me home.

Why Toowoomba Clubhouse? I love the members and that they are all individuals. That keeps me going. No matter the challenges I see, I love seeing our members and staff work together and support each other.
