The Hospitality and Horticultural Units

Preparing the Daily Meal

A two course meal for lunch is prepared daily by members, staff and volunteers; usually catering for between twenty to thirty people including members, staff, other customers and guests. All the meals are served from the kitchen bench at one o'clock. Some of the activities in providing these meals are --
  • planning a meal
  • budgeting for the kitchen finances
  • shopping for groceries
  • chopping vegetables
  • cooking a meal on a commercial gas stove
  • serving a course from the kitchen bench
  • using the automatic sanitiser
You will also be able to pick up hygiene skills in food preparation. This unit maintains a tea and coffee dispenser at the reception desk; a cup of beverage costs twenty cents.

Your Meal

You pay for your lunch at meal time, $3.50 for the main course and $1.00 for dessert, but you need to book in by 10:30 AM. Morning tea costs 50c. On Thursday there is a BBQ. Taking these payments at lunch time is another task.

The Garden

You may have an interest in other manual skills like --
  • maintaining the lawn
  • developing and taking care of the vegetable, herb and ornamental gardens
  • keeping the buildings and other external equipment in good condition
The garden makes an important contribution to the daily meal.
